Created Issue: Migrating test cases to TFS 2012 [10097]

I tried to import some test cases to TFS 2012, using the tool and it is not working as expected.
In the field mapping page, the 'Next' button remains dimmed and not able to proceed further.
Please note: The same file can be successfully imported to TFS 2010, with the same field mapping.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

"Test Case Migrator Plus" (Excel/MHT) Tool

Overview

Test Case Migrator Plus tool allows test related artifacts, present in Excel and MHT/Word formats, to be imported into Team Foundation Server. It works with both Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012.

The tool contains 2 workflows, the Excel based workflow and the MHT/doc workflow, each of which is described below:

Excel based workflow:

Migrates Test case information (along with Test Steps) present in Excel into Team Foundation Server – This is a ONE way migration only.
Migrates work items belonging to Requirement/User story and Bug work item types present in Microsoft Excel into Team Foundation Server – This is a ONE way migration only.
Supports multi-pass migration process - i.e., each work item type has to be migrated in a different invocation/session of the tool.
Maintains links between work item types (Parent/Child, Related, Tested By, Tests etc) across multiple passes.
Provides ability to create Test suites for a test case work item type.
Provides a wizard based UI to run the tool one Excel file in a single run.

MHT/Doc based workflow:

Migrates Visual Studio 2005/2008 manual test templates present in MHT/doc formats into Team Foundation Server – This also is ONE way migration only.
Provides a wizard based UI to run the tool iterating over multiple MHT/Doc files within a folder in a single run.

Capabilities common to both Excel and MHT/doc workflows:

Provides a command line support to run the tool in a batch mode.
Allows you to save your selections/configurations into a settings/mappings file to be reused later.
Default settings/mapping file that works across AGILE, CMMI and SCRUM based projects is shipped along with the tool.

These capabilities allow you to reap all the benefits associated with Test Case Management (requirements traceability, test coverage, requirements coverage, test execution, test result analysis etc) present in Visual Studio 2010 / Visual Studio 2012 post migration.

Pre-Requisites

For Visual Studio 2010:

Before you can run the “Binaries for VS2010 - Test Case Migrator Plus V1.2 RTM” tool, both the following pre-requisites need to be present on the machine. Without these, the tool will not function.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 RTM/SP1 bits
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition RTM (Web Install) (OR)
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Premium Edition RTM (Web Install) (OR)
- Microsoft Visual Studio Test Professional RTM (Web Install) AND Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Team Explorer (ISO) Explorer (ISO)
Version of Microsoft Office 2003 or beyond

For Visual Studio 2012:
Before you can run the “Binaries for VS2012 - Test Case Migrator Plus V1.2 RTM” tool, both the following pre-requisites need to be present on the machine. Without these, the tool will not function.

Installation

If you have Visual Studio 2010 client bits installed, then:
Download the “Binaries for VS2010 - TestCaseMigratorPlus(Excel-MHT) V1.2 RTM.zip" and extract it to a folder and start the TestCaseMigratorPlus.exe application. Along with the binaries package, the other files that might be useful include the Readme document, the Linking internals document and the samples package (one for Excel & other for MHT). The sample packages contain corresponding setting file that you can use to jump start the migration process.

If you have Visual Studio 2012 client bits installed, then:
Download the “Binaries for VS2012 - TestCaseMigratorPlus(Excel-MHT) V1.2 RTM.zip" and extract it to a folder and start the TestCaseMigratorPlus.exe application. What's new for the V1.2 RTM version

This release (V1.2 RTM) includes:

Support for connecting to Hosted Team Foundation Server Preview.
Support for connecting to Team Foundation Server 11 Beta.
Fix to issue with read-only attribute being set for LinksMapping-ReportFile which may have led to problems when saving the report file.
Fix to issue with “related links” not being set properly in certain conditions.
Fixes to ensure that tool works fine when the Excel file contained rich text data.
- Note: Data is still imported in plain text only.

What's new for the V1.1 RTM version

The V1.1 RTM release includes fixes for 2 reported issues:

Issue#1: The tool crashes when used against a Scrum project template
This version includes the fix that enables you to work with Projects created with the Scrum Template. Without this fix, trying to use the tool against a project created using a Scrum template would either crash the tool or give various errors.
The core problem with the Scrum template was that the “Bug” work item was present in both “Requirements” category and “Bugs” category, whereas the tool was expecting it to be present only in the “Bugs” category. This has now been corrected.

Issue#2: Test Steps/Expected Results imported via tool do not show up in Microsoft Test Runner (MTR) during manual testing
The tool incorrectly imports the Test steps with Expected Results. Any test step with Expected result should be marked as a Validate step, however this was not set appropriately by the tool. As a result, when the test case is executed manually in MTR, the expected result does not show up inline with the test step.
Fix is that the ‘TestStepType’ field for such a test step should be set as TestStepType.ValidateStep

With RC2, the following functionality was added to the Excel based workflow:

Created Issue: Test Case Migrator on Win8 - crashes [10038]

I am trying to use the Test Case Plus tool on my 64-bit Windows 8 laptop. The tools crashes after selecting fields from an Excel spreadsheet. Here are the steps;

1. select Excel as the import option
2. pick a worksheet and fields
3. hit next ==> crashes here with a 'Test Case Migrator Plus has stopped working' msg

Is this a known issue?

Hi,

I have created a test case template which has testcases and links to defects,requirements and tried to import using the Test Case Migrator Plus tool into TFS with the exact link mapping.Import was successful but only test cases are imported into TFS and not the links.The ALL LINKS tab in TFS is empty.

Please provide the solution if anyone has faced the similar issue

Hi,

I have created an excel test case template which has the Test Cases, links for Defects and Requirements and tried to import them using 'Test Case Migrator Plus ' tool by selecting the exact link mapping.Test cases are getting imported into TFS successfully but the ALL LINKS tab is empty (no link to defects or requirements) nor any error message is displayed during the import. I can create the link manually

Request for help is any one faced the similar issue

I am using Test Case Migrator Plus (R2) version and TFS 2012.Please let me know if this works or provide any other alternate solution

When setting a check mark in the option "Multiple test steps are present in single cell separated by new line character" in the Miscellaneous step, no test plan is created in TFS/MTM. If I run the tool (btw a great tool!) with precisely the same setup without checking the above option, everything works fine: a test plan is created which is browsable in MTM.I have test steps for each test case within a single cell in my Excel file, so for me it is critical to enable this option.

There is now a patch for this. Patch Id 14033. We required this fixing for one of our projects while a low impact problem it was quite irritating.

This has been tested for our scenarios. The fix is a low impact change so should have no side effects. But please check before adding to a live environment.

This is a fix for issue 9781. This is not yet at active state and cannot be added as a reference.

The problem was due to the new created object not having references to the suite of the original object added. This is a low impact fix and has been tested for our scenarios by our test team.

I am struggling with Step 1. I follow your instructions, but I get the error "Input String not in correct format" as well. The requirements do not get loaded, nor is the a task created named: <DONOTDELETEORCHANGE><TestCaseMigratorPlus><LinksMetaData><Stored as a Task work item>.

I'm trying to connect to my fresh TF Service instance and test the migration of work items using tcmimport from within a corporate environment. The TCMImport connection attempt fails as proxy authentication is required, but there's no manual prompts to enter this.

I get the same thing with the Excel Team tab, so I'm guessing the same mechanism is in play.

Is there a workaround here? Or do I just have to attempt again outside the proxy (i.e. from DMZ etc ...).

This would be extremely helpful, A large number of our test cases contain ONLY shared steps. If we had the ability to import shared steps, we could then link them to the test cases.

I might be missing something. When I import from Excel that have multiple steps, it works as described and imports the steps as separate line items in the test case. However, I have some expected results for some of the steps. Is there a way I can import a specific expect result into a given step?

For example, if I have a 10 step test case, and step 2 and 7 have expected results, I would hope I can put a carriage return on Expected Result 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

Thoughts?

Rated 5 Stars (out of 5) - This is an excellent tool! I used it to import Excel Test cases into TFS. I couldn't figure out however, how to populate the Summary RTB in TFS2012.... Perhaps another day.
